Mystery of the ‘Cheshire Cat’ of quantum physics solved: Scientists manage to separate a particle from its spin

If, for example, a beam of neutrons is divided into two beams using a silicon crystal, it can be shown that the individual neutrons can travel simultaneously along both paths in what is known as a ‘quantum superposition’.
And now scientists have measured this bizarre property, which means that they might be able to control the behavior of neutrons in future.
The groundbreaking research was performed by an team at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble, France.

The quantum Cheshire Cat follows in the paw steps of Schrodinger’s cat, the most famous feline to make an impact on the world of physics.
In Austrian physicist Erwin Schrodinger’s celebrated 1935 thought experiment, a cat that is both alive and dead was used to illustrate the apparent paradox of quantum superposition.
The imaginary experiment involved a cat, a flask of poison, and a radioactive source placed in a sealed box.
If an internal monitor detects radioactivity, caused by the decay of a single atomic particle, the flask is shattered, releasing the poison that kills the cat.
Theoretically the particle can be in a superposition of a decayed and non-decayed state at the same time, logically leading to the cat being both dead and alive.
But this state of affairs only lasts until the box is opened. Once an observer peers inside the box, a cat that is either alive or dead is revealed.

Is this the reason why so many war has been fought…to heat up your home and light up the bulbs above your dinner table?
A crematorium in the United Kingdom recently announced that it would use heat from its burners to produce electricity and bring down its energy costs.
In Britain, crematoriums are a major source of air pollution from the mercury in dental fillings. The government has mandated that all such establishments cut their emissions in half by next year and eliminate them altogether by the end of the decade.
Durham Crematorium decided to take the required renovation as an opportunity to reduce its utility bills as well as its toxic emissions. The county run business is currently undergoing a £2.3 million project to install three new furnaces. The first phase, due to be completed early next year, will include a “heat recovery system” to be fitted to one burner to capture and recycle heat for the building.
The projects second phase will include the installation of turbines on the other two furnaces. Heat generated during cremation will trigger the turbines and generate enough electricity to power 1,500, according to Durham Crematorium.
Under the UK’s feed-in tarriff program, all of this extra electricity could be sold back to the National Grid at a decent price. If successful, this scheme means that not only will the crematorium be powered by the bodies of the deceased, so will many homes and businesses in the area.
While it’s not the first crematorium in Britain to recycle heat in this way, the Durham Crematorium is certainly the only one that will generate electricity to be sold back into the grid.
Experts say that if the heat recycling process proves profitable, other crematoriums across Europe could follow suit. While it’s definitely a little creepy to think about dead bodies heating up your living room, it’s actually a pretty resourceful idea. The traditional funeral process is extremely resource intensive and is responsible for many toxic substances leaching into our soil and water supply.
Recycling corpses into much needed affordable energy is a more honorable and practical way to dispose of the body. For those that have already chosen cremation, it could be comforting to know that they’ll get to perform one last generous service to mankind by being transformed into a weird source of renewable energy.

Army developing ‘synthetic telepathy’
Vocal cords were overrated anyway. A new Army grant aims to create email or voice mail and send it by thought alone. No need to type an e-mail, dial a phone or even speak a word.
Known as synthetic telepathy, the technology is based on reading electrical activity in the brain using anelectroencephalograph, or EEG. Similar technology is being marketed as a way to control video games by thought.
“I think that this will eventually become just another way of communicating,” said Mike D’Zmura, from the University of California, Irvine and the lead scientist on the project.
“It will take a lot of research, and a lot of time, but there are also a lot of commercial applications, not just military applications,” he said.
The idea of communicating by thought alone is not a new one. In the 1960s, a researcher strapped an EEG to his head and, with some training, could stop and start his brain’s alpha waves to compose Morse code messages.

Christian Democrat politician Patrick Sensburg, head of the Bundestag’s parliamentary inquiry into the NSA surveillance scandal, was asked on television whether politicians were considering a return to older technology.
Speaking on the Morgenmagazin TV programme, he replied ‘As a matter of fact, we have – and not electronic models either’ before adding ‘Yes, no joke,’ The Guardian reports.
It comes a year after allegations surfaced that the mobile telephone of German Chancellor Angela Merkel had been bugged by American agents.
Just last week her government told the CIA station chief in Berlin to leave the country, in a dramatic display of anger after German officials unearthed two suspected spies.

“Markus allegedly approached the CIA via e-mail in 2012 to share German intelligence, and the offer was accepted. He is accused of providing 218 documents over three in-person meetings with CIA agents in Austria, and he was paid about $34,000. Local authorities only detected Markus in May 2014 because he allegedly sent an unencrypted e-mail to the Russian consulate in Munich that was intercepted by German intelligence.”
Germany and Russia are frantically seeking old-fashioned typewriters to embark on a low-tech OPSEC approach to communications to avoid NSA spying. Portions of the German government are going retro to avoid high-tech snooping by the United States government.

The NSA investigation head has been working for several months to set up a manner in which Edward Snowden could testify before his committee.
According to Sensburg, the German government is particularly interested in emphasizing the importance of operational security in the country. His committee has already purchased at least one manual typewriter for use by the government.
