In experiments that have turned science fiction into reality, researchers have succeeded in implanting a false memory.
Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the U.S. have shown it can be done in real life – at least in mice.

Scientists have discovered that not only can the planarian worm regrow its head if its cut off, the regenerated brain contains the same memories that were stored in the decapitated one.
Researchers from Tufts University in Boston tested the memory of the planarian worms by measuring how long it took them to reach food in a lab environment.
The small yellow worms had been trained to ignore the bright lights in the lab so they could find their meals without being distracted and the scientists found that even after decapitation worms remembered this training.
The work echoes the plot of the 2010 film Inception, in which a ‘neurological spy’ played by Leonardo DiCaprio is hired to plant an idea in someone’s mind.
In fact, the process of creating a false memory is known as inception.
Researchers began by putting the animals in a box in which they felt safe.
They then zeroed in on the brain cells that were storing the animals’ memory of where they were and programmed the cells to ‘turn on the memory’ in light.
The next day, they put the mice in a second box and used pulses of light to reactivate the memory of the day before.
While this memory was being replayed, they gave the animals mild electric shocks.It was hoped this would alter the memory.
And it did. When the animals were put back in the first box, they froze in fear.
This is despite them having felt safe and not being given any electric shocks there.
This, say the scientists, means their memory of the first box was successfully altered to associate it with the pain of an electric shock. In other words, a false memory had been implanted.
The researchers said: ‘In this study, we believe we have for the first time succeeded in incepting, or implanting a false memory, in the mouse brain.’
Their experiments also showed that false and real memory trigger many of the same brain regions, making them very difficult to tell apart.

The researchers, from the University of California, claim the bendy e-skin could be used to restore feeling for people with prosthetic limbs, in smartphone displays, car dashboards or used to give robots a sense of touch.

NEW SENSOR DETECTS HUMIDITY, PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE TO RECREATE THE SENSE OF TOUCH
In a separate breakthough, researchers at Stanford University have made a sensor that detects humidity, pressure and temperature at the same time to recreate the sense of touch.
The technology could be used to give veterans who have lost limbs in wars the ability to feel ‘human touch’ again, The New York Post reported.
In the future they think it could be used to make ‘electronic skin’ to cover prosthetic limbs.
The scientists even believe the sensors could be more sensitive than our natural sense of touch.
Zhenan Bao, a researcher at the university, said: ‘Our sensor can detect pressure that is a few hundred times less than that gentle touch.’
She tested the sensor by placing it on a man’s wrist to measure his pulse and realised that it could detect more than a normal human finger.
The sensor could therefore be used to help detect a heart attack or stroke before they happen.
The researchers will now explore how to turn the device into artificial skin and transmit the electric signals to the brain.
The skin was created by Ali Javey, a professor of electrical engineering and computer sciences at the Berkeley campus of the university.
It was built from a layer of polymer, or plastic, thinner than a piece of paper, melted onto the top of a strip of silicon.
Once the plastic had hardened, flexible electronic circuits were layered onto the skin.
The plastic was then peeled from the silicon to create the flexible film with the sensors and semiconductors inside.
Samples of the e-skin are 16 x 16 pixels and each pixel contains a transistors made from semiconductor carbon nanotubes, an organic light emitting diode (OLED), and a pressure sensor.
In 2010, Javey’s team created a network of pressure sensors made from nanowires fitted to a large sheet of polymer.
When Javey touched this sheet of plastic, an electronic readout of the amount of pressure applied was fed into a computer.
The researchers hoped the e-skin could be used to restore a sense of touch to patients with prosthetic limbs, for example.
Javey and his engineers believe their latest skin could be fitted to robots to give them more lifelike skin and touch capabilities.

A gloomy Norwegian town will receive its first ever rays of winter sunshine this year after locals set up giant mirrors to bounce light down from the mountainside.
The industrial town of Rjukan is nestled deep in a valley floor in the rugged Telemark county and with the sun moving low across the sky during winter, it gets no direct sunlight between the months of September and March.
For years the sun-starved locals have had to take a purpose-built cable car to the top of the mountain side in order to catch a few winter rays.

Embryos don’t develop the ability to hear for at least 14 weeks, so Dr Castello thinks that the vibrations produced by the music are key.
Dagan Wells, an Oxford University fertility expert said that while the idea might sound bizarre, it could have some scientific basis.
He said: ‘Embryos produced using IVF sit on a dish, stewing in their own juices but those produced naturally are wafted down the fallopian tubes, rocking and rolling all their way to the uterus.
‘This movement means that the embryo experiences a very dynamic environment, which may have some advantages, particularly in terms of getting rid of waste products.
‘The vibrations caused by music may stimulate this effect.
‘One might speculate that techno music, with its pounding bass beat might do the best job of all.’

Microsoft Research presents “HomeOS.”
It’s actually a vision that Bill Gates has had for over a decade. This 2002 PC World article points to a Gatesian concept of “a home full of smart gadgets.” Most of the prototypes Gates touted back then actually seem almost comically irrelevant, given the smartphone in your pocket right now, including an alarm clock that “uses a wireless Internet connection to automatically update the time” and refrigerator magnets whose LCDs offer “real-time data feeds, such as time, weather, sport scores, road conditions, and other useful information.” I can tape my iPhone to my fridge and do a lot better than that.
HomeOS isn’t a secret. Miscrosoft’s research geeks periodically pipe up to report on the progress of their vision. Here’s a video from last year, in which one of the researchers says, “The underlying observation in our work is that a lot of us now have a dozen or so networked devices in home…so what that means is that we have all the basic ingredients for building smarter homes already.” He adds: “The way these devices work today, and the way they’re controlled, it requires a lot of effort on the part of a tech enthusiast to get them going together to manage their homes.”
But the idea behind HomeOS–were it to ever migrate from the research division to the actual products division within Microsoft–is to make the smart home a reality for the masses. The key here would be to create a HomeOS that is device agnostic, allowing easy integration of your Nest thermostat, your iPhone, your webOS-powered refrigerator, and so on. (Being generous with competitors doesn’t mean Redmond couldn’t make money off of the thing, naturally–another white paper points out that HomeOS would need an app store of its own.) Microsoft is reportedly testing out HomeOS in about a dozen homes already.
Of course, inevitably, where the technologists go, the science fiction writers have already been. Ray Bradbury once wrote a story about a smart home called “The Veldt” (it ends poorly for the family involved; you can listen to Stephen Colbert, of all people, read that story here). Disney adapted and sanitized “The Veldt,” making it into a cheesy TV movie called “Smart House” in 1999. Let’s hope HomeOS can throw a party as totally radical as the one shown here!

The company is harnessing technology to allow train windows to silently talk to commuters in a new product placement strategy.
Tired commuters resting their heads against train windows in Germany got a surprise when they heard a voice inside their heads.
Transmitters on a train route between Munich and North Rhine-Westphalia send high-frequency vibrations to windowpanes, allowing commuters to hear advertising messages through bone conduction.
