The petition, posted by private citizens on the White House’s “We the People”petition Web page, has 15,603 signatures. If the page receives 25,000 signatures by August 9, an automatic review process kicks in, according to the White House.
TSA, said the petition, was supposed to publish the policy in the Federal Register, take comments from the public, and justify its policy based on public input. The court told TSA to do all this “promptly.” “A year later, TSA has not even started that public process.”
Privacy and civil liberties groups have been in federal court trying to get the TSA to review the use of the technology, saying it violates privacy rights and due process.
