Astronomers believe they have found the sun’s ‘long-lost brother’ – a stellar body born from the same gas cloud as our own star.
The researchers claim there is even a ‘small’ chance that this solar sibling could host planets that harbour life.
But even if its solar system proves barren, the discovery could help scientists find other stellar twins that may help shed light on how our sun formed.
The University of Texas says the star, called HD 162826, is 15 per cent more massive than our sun and located 110 light-years away in the constellation Hercules. The star is not visible to the unaided eye, but easily can be seen with low-power binoculars, not far from the bright star Vega.
‘We want to know where we were born,’ Professor Ivan Ramirez from the University of Texas at Austin said.
‘If we can figure out in what part of the galaxy the sun formed, we can constrain conditions on the early solar system. That could help us understand why we are here.’
In their earliest days, collisions could have knocked chunks off of planets, and these fragments could have travelled between solar systems.
These may have been responsible for bringing primitive life to Earth.
Or, fragments from Earth could have transported life to planets orbiting solar siblings.

Seeing faces in inanimate objects is known as face pareidolia and although the phenomenon is common, little has been known about why it happens, until now.
Researchers in Canada analysed brain responses to seeing faces in patterns and discovered the recognition occurs in the frontal and visual cortex.
WHAT IS FACE PAREIDOLIA?
Pareidolia is the psychological response to seeing faces and other significant and everyday items in random stimulus.
It is a form of apophenia, which is when people see patterns or connections in random, unconnected data.
There have been multiple occasions when people have claimed to see religious images and themes in unexpected places, especially the faces of religious figures.
Many involve images of Jesus, the Virgin Mary and the word Allah.
For example, in September 2007 a callus on a tree resembled a monkey, leading believers in Singapore to pay homage to the Monkey god.
Another famous instance was when Mary’s face was a grilled cheese sandwich.
Images of Jesus have even been spotted inside the lid of a jar of Marmite and in a potato.

A man who in more recent times claimed to know the secret of how the pyramids and other megalithic structures were built was Edward Leedskalnin.
He lived in a place called Coral Castle, near Miami, Florida, which he built himself from giant blocks of coral weighing up to 30 tons.
In 28 years, working alone, without the use of modern construction machinery, he quarried and erected a total of 1100 tons.
He was very secretive and usually worked at night, and died in 1952 without divulging his construction techniques, despite visits from engineers and government officials.
Some teenagers spying on him one evening claimed they saw him ‘float coral blocks through the air like hydrogen balloons’.
It is widely thought that he had discovered some means of locally reversing the effects of gravity.
From the remaining contents of Leedskalnin’s workshop and photographic evidence, engineer Chris Dunn suggests that he generated a radio signal that caused the coral to vibrate at its resonant frequency, and then used an electromagnetic field to flip the magnetic poles of the atoms so that they were repulsed by the earth’s magnetic field.
When people asked Leedskalnin how he had moved all of the stone by himself, he refused to give over his method and would only reply to whoever was asking with the same statement: “I understand the laws of weight and leverage and I know the secrets of the people who built the pyramids (being those at the site at Giza in Egypt).

When a nerve is severed, the muscles at one end of that nerve are cut off from signals from the brain, and essentially immobilised.
This can potentially lead to atrophy, a process in which the nerves waste away. To prevent this, neural signals still need to be sent from the brain over the gap in the severed nerve as it heals.

Researchers have uncovered one of the key methods the Egyptians used to build the pyramids.
They have long been baffled by exactly how workers were able to transport large blocks of stone to construction sites.
Now, they say the key was simple – wet sand.
‘For the construction of the pyramids, the ancient Egyptians had to transport heavy blocks of stone and large statues across the desert,’ researchers at the University of Amsterdam said.
The team tried to replicate this – and found wet sand was the key.
The Egyptians therefore placed the heavy objects on a sledge that workers pulled over the sand.
Research from the University of Amsterdam has now revealed that the Egyptians probably made the desert sand in front of the sledge wet.
Experiments have demonstrated that the correct amount of dampness in the sand halves the pulling force required.
To test the theory, the physicists placed a laboratory version of the Egyptian sledge in a tray of sand.
They determined both the required pulling force and the stiffness of the sand as a function of the quantity of water in the sand.
To determine the stiffness they used a rheometer, which shows how much force is needed to deform a certain volume of sand.
