Planes powered by cow flatulence, luggage that floats on air and planes that harness passenger body heat could all one day be a possibility – if the engineers of tomorrow get their way.
These are some of the shortlisted entries of the global Airbus’ Fly Your Ideas competition – created to find eco-efficient ways that aviators can develop their fleets of planes in the future.
Each team will now present its ideas to a panel of Airbus judges in Toulouse for a chance of winning £25,500 (€30,000).
The body heat powering cabins idea was submitted by Team Embarker from Malaysia as part of the Airbus Fly Your Ideas competition. The team said that heat-sensitive material in cabin seats could be used to capture and store the energy from passengers. This energy could then be used to power the onboard electronics and reduce how much energy flights use
An artist’s impression of what Fly Your Ideas finalist, Team Levar from Brazil’s floating luggage hold could look like. The hold would be fitted with air jets, similar to those seen on air hockey tables. This would help airport workers slide luggage on and off planes more easily

Using the principles of air hockey tables, the Brasillian entry involved retro-fitting a plane’s cargo hold with ‘super-light sliding sections’.
The sections would blow air that would make the cargo and luggage hover slightly off the ground.
This would help airport workers to quickly, easily and safely load and unload luggage.
Team Levar claim the technology could help passengers get their bags 30 per cent faster.
The technology could also be fitted to the inside of planes to reduce the weight caused by the luggage in the hold, which in turn could reduce the amount of fuel used.

Planes powered by cows, or more specifically, cow flatulence was submitted by Team CLiMA from Australia.
The plans would create a sustainable fuel that puts liquefied methane gas into ‘specially-created supercooled pods’ that sit next to the engines.
The team claim this solution could reduce CO2 emissions by 97 per cent.
Team Avas from India put forwarded the idea of a shape-shifting engine that would help reduce noise.

Barack Obama confronted China President Xi Jinping over allegations of cyber theft yesterday but they agreed to tackle climate change at a Californian summit.
The U.S. President privately presented Xi with detailed evidence of intellectual property theft emanating from China, according to the Huffington Post.
While Obama did not address the media, his national security advisor Tom Donilon said the direct theft of U.S. property would hurt relations between the two countries if not resolved.

While there were reportedly few clear policy breakthroughs on cybersecurity, Chinese officials said Xi opposed all forms of cyberspying and claimed no responsibility for attacks against the U.S.
‘Cybersecurity should not become the root cause of mutual suspicion and frictions between our two countries,‘ Yang Jiechi, Xi’s senior foreign policy adviser, told reporters.
‘Rather, it should be a new bright spot in our cooperation.’
In about eight hours of talks over two days at the sweeping Annenberg Retreat in California, the leaders also took a significant step toward tackling climate change.
The men announced that their countries had agreed for the first time to partner on reducing hydrofluorocarbons, a potent greenhouse gas used in refrigerators, air conditioners, and industrial applications.
Donilon said discussions on North Korea were also fruitful, with the leaders agreeing the rogue state had to be denuclearized.
North Korea is estimated to have a handful of crude nuclear devices, with some analysts putting its arsenal at four to eight plutonium bombs.
While China is Pyongyang’s strongest ally and economic benefactor, Xi has signaled a growing impatience with North Korea’s unpredictable and provocative nuclear threats.
‘China has taken a number of steps in recent months to send a clear message to North Korea, including though enhanced enforcement of sanctions and through public statements by the senior leadership in China,’ Donilon said.

The two-day summit, which kicked off on Friday, marked the first time the leaders had met since Xi took office in March.
The extensive talks included a working dinner of lobster tamales, Porterhouse steak and cherry pie prepared by celebrity chef Bobby Flay, and a morning walk through the manicured gardens of the 200-acre estate on the edge of the Mojave Desert.
During their walk, the leaders stopped to sit on a custom-designed park bench made of California redwood that Obama presented to Xi as a gift.
The U.S. president told reporters that the talks were ‘terrific’, as the leaders closed the summit with private tea with Xi’s wife.
The men are expected to meet again in September, on the sidelines of an international economic summit in Russia.
Xi also invited Obama to travel to China soon for a similarly informal round of one-on-one talks.

Their pilots each saw ‘two flat, silver discs’, with some flying within 100ft.
Air traffic control then spotted six UFOs on their radars before they suddenly disappeared.

AVATARS could be used to treat schizophrenia by helping control the voices patients hear inside their heads

- They can then talk to the avatars and force the hallucinations away
- Because patients know the avatars can’t harm them, it can boost their confidence in handling future episodes
An avatar system that can help schizophrenics control the voices in their heads is being developed by British researchers.
As part of the therapy, patients create an avatar by choosing a face and a voice for the person, or persons, they believe are inside their head.
Therapists can then encourage the patients to oppose the avatar and force it away, which boosts their confidence in dealing with their hallucinations.
A new treatment for schizophrenics uses computer avatars to help them manage their hallucinations. The patient chooses a face and a voice for each hallucination. The therapist then encourages the patient to oppose the avatar and because they know it can’t hurt them, patients can confidently manage their delusions
HOW DOES THE SYSTEM WORK?
The first stage in the therapy is for the patient to create a computer-based avatar, by choosing the face and voice of the entity they believe is talking to them.
The system then synchronises the avatar’s lips with its speech, enabling a therapist to speak to the patient through the avatar in real-time.
The therapist encourages the patient to oppose the voice and gradually teaches them to take control of their hallucinations.
The avatar doesn’t address the patients’ delusions directly but the study found the hallucinations improve as an overall effect of the therapy.
This is because patients can interact with the avatar as though it was a real person, because they have created it, but they know it cannot harm them.
Many of the voices heard by schizophrenics threaten to kill or harm them and their family.
The researchers, from University College London (UCL), claim that the computer-based therapy could provide ‘quick and effective’ help for managing the disorder and it is far more successful than current medical treatments available.
The system could also help reduce the frequency and severity of episodes of schizophrenia in future cases.
During initial tests, 16 patients were given up to seven 30-minute sessions of therapy.
The team of researchers discovered that all of the patients reported an improvement in the frequency and severity of the voices that they heard.
Three of the patients stopped hearing voices completely after experiencing auditory hallucinations for 16, 13 and 3 and a half years respectively.
The avatar doesn’t address the patients’ delusions directly but the study found the hallucinations improve as an overall effect of the therapy.
Professor Julian Leff, Emeritus Professor in UCL Mental Health Sciences unit, developed the therapy and is leading the project.
He said: ‘Even though patients interact with the avatar as though it was a real person, because they have created it, they know that it cannot harm them, as opposed to the voices, which often threaten to kill or harm them and their family.
