LAPD Now Arresting Photographers

September 5, 2012

Despite legal battles raging over 10 years and a noticeable lack of terrorist activity in that time, the LAPD is moving ahead as the first police department in the U.S. toimplement Special Order 1, a policy which will allow the police to detain and arrest you if you are taking photos or videotaping certain buildings deemed by them as “suspicious activity”. The problem being of course – what exactly is considered suspicious activity?

Take for instance the innocent man Greggory Moore who was confronted for shooting pictures on his front lawn just because it happened to have the court house in the background. Eight policemen were called by “good citizen spies” to confront and interrogate him while he was held with his hands behind his back then patted down. Other photographers have experienced similar heinous police behavior and even been threatened with being put on the FBI watch list for taking pictures at the airport.

Researchers successfully manipulate rat DREAMS… and human dreams could be next

Rat dreams: Researchers have successfully manipulated rat dreams, in a new study (stock photo)

Researchers have successfully manipulated rat dreams, and soon they could be manipulating what runs through humans’ minds at night.

In an extremely creepy breakthrough, scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology managed to influence what the animals were dreaming about by replaying an audio cure associated with the previous day’s events.

Unsurprisingly, that involved running through a maze.

Neuroscientist Matt Wilson, from the University’s Picower Institute for learning and memory, told io9.com that his team exploited the way the brain’s hippocampus encodes self-experienced events into memory.

They already knew that when we sleep the hippocampus is busy replaying a number of the day’s events to consolidate our memory, but they didn’t know whether these ‘replays’ could be influenced by environmental cues.

Wilson trained a group of rats to run through a maze using two distinct audio signals.

In Clinton and Warren, Competing Messages for the Middle Class

If you’re a candidate for president, the convention affords you a fleeting window of opportunity, about three hours total of network airtime, to present speakers who will get across your one central message to the wide section of America. In the case of this Democratic convention, though, Wednesday’s lineup reveals the essential dilemma that has often made President Obama’s re-election campaign, and much of his presidency, seem as muddled as a Clint Eastwood monologue.

The opening festivities on Tuesday, at least before Michelle Obama’s emotional prime-time appearance, were about dispensing with all the speakers whom Democrats didn’t really want the rest of the county to notice. Jimmy Carter did a video. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid took the stage to remind Americans of how much they love Congress. There was a moving tribute to Ted Kennedy.

Wednesday, though, begins the hard sell of President Obama to the middle class. And for this task, the campaign has juxtaposed two prime-time speakers — Elizabeth Warren and Bill Clinton, one right after the other — who in their core philosophies represent contradictory, even irreconcilable strains of American liberalism.

Mr. Obama’s strategists will tell themselves what they have said since the president first ran in 2008 — that there is no real inconsistency in these two wings of the party, that both Mr. Clinton and Ms. Warren speak to the same imperiled middle class, a category so broad and ill-defined that the vast majority of Americans would say they belong to it.

In truth, though, Mr. Clinton and Ms. Warren speak to different audiences and reflect inescapably divergent perspectives on how to confront the epic challenges of globalization and inequality.

Mr. Clinton is the president who made the sustained case to Democrats that they had to be pro-growth and pro-Wall Street, not just to get elected, but also to build a more modern economy. He was the one, as spokesman for the centrist Democratic Leadership Council, who told Democrats again and again that they couldn’t succeed as a party that loved jobs but disdained the businesses that create them. Mr. Clinton transformed welfare, balanced the budget and declared an end to the liberal era of government, which is why a lot of conservative-leaning independent voters would re-elect him if they could.

The return of the allies… CIA secretly operates on Syrian border, supplies arms to rebels

Syria CIVIL WAR – OBAMA signed SECRET order allowing CIA to HELP REBELS

http://youtu.be/PYscKdn-UL8

American secret service operatives are distributing illegal assault rifles, anti-tank rocket launchers and other ammunition to Syrian opposition, the New York Times reports. But due to some rebels’ links to Al Qaeda, the CIA’s task is precarious.

The paper reports that for weeks now, officers based in southeast Turkey have supervised the flow of illegal arms to numerous opposition factions ready to fight the regime of President Bashar Assad. The only problem is some of the rebel groups have links with terrorist organizations such as Al Qaeda, so the CIA mission must be careful not to arm proven terrorists by mistake.

Arms and ammunition are being brought into Syria mainly over the Turkish border with the help of Syria’s Muslim Brotherhood network and other groups, the report says. Expenses are being shared by Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

The NYT source, an unnamed Arab intelligence official, revealed that American officers are also collecting information on Syrian opposition groups and recruiting informants among their ranks. The source said the Obama administration is considering sharing its intelligence data, such as satellite images and detailed information on the location and maneuvers of Syrian troops.

According to the source, CIA operatives might be helping the rebels with organizing a rudimentary intelligence organization. The CIA agents have reportedly not set foot on Syrian soil, however.

Report claims extra CIA torture use

Former president, George W. Bush, his vice president Dick Cheney and the CIA, have said that the method was used on only three senior al-Qaeda suspects at secret CIA black sites in Thailand and Poland — Khaled Sheikh Mohammed, Aby Zubayda and Abd al-Rahman al-Nashiri, all currently being held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Human Rights Watch said it has uncovered evidence of a wider use of waterboarding in American interrogations of detainees than has been acknowledged by the United States.

Its report, released today, details further brutal treatment at secret CIA-run prisons under the Bush administration-era US programme of detention and rendition of terror suspects.

The report also paints a more complete picture of Washington’s close cooperation with the regime of Libya’s former dictator Moammar Gadhafi in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.

The US handed over to Libya the Islamist opponents of Gadhafi that it detained abroad with only thin “diplomatic assurances” that they would not be mistreated, and several of them were subsequently tortured in prison, Human Rights Watch said.

The 154-page report features interviews by the New York-based group with 14 Libyan dissident exiles.

They described systematic abuses while they were held in US-led detention centers in Afghanistan — some as long as two years — or in US-led interrogations in Pakistan, Morocco, Thailand, Sudan and elsewhere before the Americans handed them over to Libya.

“Not only did the US deliver (Gadhafi) his enemies on a silver platter, but it seems the CIA tortured many of them first, said Laura Pitter, counterterrorism adviser at Human Rights Watch and author of the report.

“The scope of the Bush administration abuse appears far broader than previously acknowledged,” she said.

The report comes days after the Justice Department announced it would not bring criminal charges against any CIA personnel over severe interrogation methods used in the detention and rendition programme.

Investigators said they could not prove any interrogators went beyond guidelines authorised by the Bush administration.

Rights activists and some Obama administration officials said even the authorised techniques constituted torture, though the CIA and Bush administration argued they did not.

Any new instances of waterboarding, however, would go beyond the three that the CIA has said were authorised.

Obama scrambles for Jewish support over Jerusalem reference

But the most controversial change was about Israel. Campaign officials said it was ordered by Obama himself to reflect his own personal views.

Democrats resurrected language in their party platform today declaring Jerusalem to be the capital of Israel after President Barack Obama objected and Republicans accused them of showing weak support for the longtime US ally.

Chaos ruled on the floor of the Democratic National Convention briefly, as delegates and convention leaders were forced to call a voice vote three times to reinstate the language in an embarrassing turnaround.

The party also restored wording mentioning God. Democrats changed the platform language to say government should help people “make the most of their God-given potential”.

But the most controversial change was about Israel. Campaign officials said it was ordered by Obama himself to reflect his own personal views.

Obama was also opposed to the “God” language being removed, a campaign official said on condition of anonymity.

Presidents from both parties over the years have declared their support for making Jerusalem the capital of Israel, but have never taken the step to move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv out of a belief that the future of Jerusalem should be decided through negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians.

Did you die before 2013, don’t worry your QR-code will be on your tombstone!

The barcode on a gravestone: Funeral director’s interactive headstones launch tributes to the departed with the swipe of a mobile phone

  • A barcode is engraved on the headstone which can be scanned to view a tribute page about the deceased
  • Those with passwords can add comments, pictures and videos to the webpage

Beyond the grave: a bizarre new way to remember the dead by scanning the bar code on the stone

As an enduring tribute to a life lived, gravestones have changed little over the centuries. Until now.
Funeral directors are giving headstones a rather modern makeover – by making them interactive.

Barcodes are being placed on the gravestones to allow visitors to find out more about the person laid to rest there. When scanned on a smartphone, the square codes – known as Quick Response or QR codes – launch a website which contains a biography of the deceased.

The page can include a profile of the person, photographs and videos of them and tributes from family and friends

Husband and work partner of Japanese reporter killed in Syria tells of moment she was gunned down by government troops (incl video)

  • Experienced war reporter Mika Yamamoto, 45, was shot dead in the flashpoint city of Aleppo last month
  • Her husband, photographer Kazutaka Sato, told how how they were split up moments after being ambushed by government forces
  • After returning to Japan with her body he delivered a letter to the Syrian Embassy in Tokyo demanding an investigation
After accompanying his wife's body back to Japan, Mr Sato visited the Syrian embassy in Tokyo and handed over a letter requesting a thorough investigation of the case

The husband and work partner of a Japanese reporter who was killed in Syria has told how she was shot dead moments after they were ambushed by government troops.

Mika Yamamoto, 45, an award-winning journalist was gunned down last month in the flashpoint city of Aleppo on her first day in the country.

Her husband, photographer Kazutaka Sato, who was with her at the time, described how they were split up moments after being ambushed by government forces.

Mr Sato, 56, said he saw 10 to 15 men walking towards them who he assumed were members of the Free Syrian Army, who had been accompanying them.

He told CBS news: ‘I held up my camera and started shooting. It was then that it happened.

‘I thought I was going to be hit and that’s when I was separated from Mika. At no point did I think that she had died.

‘I asked a rebel fighter where Mika was. He told me, “She’s at the hospital, go and see for yourself.” ‘At that point I pretty much imagined what had happened to her.

‘On the first floor of the hospital, in the lobby to the left on a stretcher, I saw a body wrapped in a sheet. And I knew then it was Mika.’

Mika Yamamoto, was an experienced and award-wining reporter, who had worked in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Balkans and Mr Sato spoke of her dedication to the job.

He added: ‘I think it was her firm belief that you can stop a war with journalism … she would also turn her attention to children.

‘I believe she wanted to tell the world how they are hurt, dead and bruised in their hearts.’

Mr Sato said the only way he believes he can come to terms with what happened is to find out exactly what happened.

Speaking at a news conference in Tokyo after he accompanied her body home from Syria he said: ‘I suspect the government side is afraid to see Western journalists, including us, report facts.’

Sato said: ‘If your country shoots journalists who report things it finds unfavourable, it is an outrageous act threatening the freedom of the press, which can never be forgiven internationally.’
‘What they fear most is a camera,’
