Robot walks four kilometers trough German city

FREIBURG – A robot of 1.70 meters tall and 100 pounds walked on Tuesday for four kilometers from the German city of Freiburg  without crashing.
The robot, called Obelix, recognized sidewalks by it self, curbs and oncoming traffic.

Only red lights proved too difficult for the color blind ‘Europe Robot’, which then had to be hand-operated.
The apparatus devised was for its first practical test out side and thought up the shortest path for himself.

It walked from the engineering faculty to the statue Bertoldsbrunnen in the center of the city.
He almost walked for 3.5 hours on the route.

That was longer than had been planned, but it was mainly because he always waited for the cameramen in his path, reported broadcaster SWR.
The robot is a project of six million of an international research team around Wolfram Burgard, University of Freiburg.
