NASA To Launch The Finest Mirrors Ever Made
This Wednesday NASA will launch its High Resolution Coronal Imager (HI-C) mission from White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, sending a sounding rocket above the atmosphere with some of the best mirrors ever made to capture incredibly-detailed ultraviolet images of our Sun.
HI-C will use a state-of-the-art imaging system to focus on a region near the center of the Sun about 135,000 miles (271,000 km) across. During its brief flight — only ten minutes long — HI-C will return some of the most detailed images of the Sun’s corona ever acquired, with a resolution five times that of previous telescopes… including NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory.

With an ability to drift over the ocean like a ship – yet transform into a vertical buoy in pursuit of scientific research – the Navy’s Floating Instrument Platform (FLIP) is one of the most unique ships on (or under) the water.

It was the billion euro airport designed to cater for Spain’s booming economy – serving both city and coast via a state-of-the-art high speed rail link.
Projected to take the overflow from Madrid’s Barajas airport, some 150 miles to the north, Ciudad Real’s flagship transport hub was to be a symbol of modern Spain’s affluence.
But sadly it has proved to be one of a number of many white elephants for the nation, shutting down in April after just three years of operation.
For many months the only flights were those of private jets, reportedly including Prince Harry on his way to a boar hunt on land nearby owned by the Duke of Westminster.
And now, the 28,000 sq ft terminal lies empty, where 5million passengers should have been waiting to be whisked away each year.
Built in 2008, it opened fully in 2009 at a total private cost of €1.1billion, and was intendend to serve both Madrid and the Andaluscian coast, each accessible by train in 50 minutes.
The Socialist regional government spent millions propping up the venue, promoting the project with advertising campaigns and approving a €140million guarantee to keep it afloat.

Red Arrows salute ‘The Spirit of Great Britain’: World’s only airworthy Vulcan opens Farnborough Airshow
The skies above a normally sedate Hampshire town erupted into life today, as the Farnborough Airshow treated plane enthusiasts to a truly thrilling sight: the world’s only airworthy Avro Vulcan bomber performing a flypast in formation with the Red Arrows.
A relic of the Cold War, the historic plane was the first of its kind to be delivered to the RAF, on the 1st of July 1960, and the last Vulcan to leave RAF service in 1993.
Now, the venerable bomber XH558 – named ‘The Spirit of Great Britain’ – is the darling of aviation enthusiasts everywhere, and drew gasps of pleasure as it opened the show by performing a flypast in formation with the Red Arrows.
Around 250,000 visitors are expected to flock to Farnborough, the world’s largest airshow, during its six-day run.
As 1,400 exhibitors from 40 countries plied their billion-pound wares today, pilots displayed their prowess at the hands of fighter jets, double-decker airliners and everything in between.
Though the skies were filled with drizzle, attendees were delighted to see the distinctive shape of a Lancaster bomber emerging from the gloom, followed by a spitfire which performed a number of flypasts before touching down.

Don’t smile! It’s the dreaded passport photo. The one you’ll be cringing at for the next ten years.
But the traditional poker-faced mugshot may be on the way out, as scientists claim the smiling ban actually makes people’s faces less – rather than more – recognisable.
Researchers at Glasgow University found people who try to look serious could distort their facial features.
In a study, individuals could look so ‘strikingly different’ from one photo to another, most people would hardly recognise them as the same person.
The results suggest that photographs of our faces – relied on by border officials – are not accurate enough to spot imposters, with important implications for national security.
