Science Journalism; A Key to the Amazing World of Science

By Maria Anna van Driel

“There you are, nervously waiting for the journalists to step on your terrain, to invade your work-space and maybe even jump into the darkest corners of your private life.  Then they arrive … looking like a pack of hungry wolves, armed with all kind of terrible questions, looking you straight in the eye and impenetrable in what they really think. Microphones and cameras are being unpacked and put into position, and not only the gazing eyes of the cameras are aimed at you…also the strict looks of the Journalist, camera-man and those of the whole world…are aimed directly at you!”

Okay, that scenario would scare the BLEEP out of me too. But we know that you are feeling a bit uncomfortable … nervous and maybe thinking; “Oh my god, they are going to misrepresent everything I say, rip me apart before I am truly death and in the process my research findings!”

As an investigative science journalist I have to say, YES…I am armed with the most diverse questions…which I WILL ask you!  YES…I will lay your personality under a magnifying glass, because the general public is eager to know you and the research you are conducting.  But NO, I am neither going to rip you nor your research findings to pieces.

Clinically speaking, the aim of a science journalist is not to obstruct the communication bridge but to render very detailed, specific, and often jargon-laden information provided by scientists into a form that non-scientists can understand and appreciate while still communicating the information accurately.

Science journalists are making sure that your ideas are accessible to the general public which is not the same as dumbing it down. Instead, as Einstein said, “Make everything as simple as possible, but no simpler.”

Words have power, words are power, words can be your power!
You can inspire a nation and invite people into the wonderland of science.

Ladies and gentlemen, let us make that our goal for 2021 because the world needs you…badly.

COVID-19; Its is not a hoax! Paramedic, Thomas van Brunschot, Weighs In

12 months ago we walked into the year 2020 not having the slightest idea about these terrifying, dark times we where about to encounter.

Today, a deep psychological fear for this biological parasite, aka COVID-19, has gripped the world population resulting in an avalanche of (conspiracy) theories passing the revue… this ever since the World Health Organization recognized this health attacking virus as a global pandemic.

What is its origin? Where is it traveling towards and when does it all stop?

Paramedic, Thomas van Brunschot, explains how he is experiencing this fear inducing pandemic from both a professional and personal point of view as his mother (93), my mother-in-law, is also being diagnosed with Corona.

The Position of the Female Scientist and Her Influence in the Scientific Community

With  Prof. Dr. Amal Amin Ibrahim Shendi

Even though we have learned that Marie Curie, a physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactive decay, was the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize in Physics and became the first person to receive a second Nobel Prize in Chemistry…the presence of female scientists spans the earliest times of the history of science wherein they have made significant contributions.

Click the ‘PLAY-BUTTON’ in the side bar ‘THE NEXT TRUTH…ONLINE RADIO’ on the right and listen to the podcast of Prof. Dr. Amal Amin

The involvement of women in the field of medicine has been recorded in several early civilizations. An ancient Egyptian physician, Merit-Ptah… who lived circa 2700 BC and described in an inscription as “chief physician”, is the earliest known female scientist named in the history of science. Agamede was cited by Homer as a healer in ancient Greece before the Trojan War and  Agnodice was the first female physician to practice legally in fourth century BC.

Gender roles were largely deterministic in the 18th century and women made substantial advances in science.

Then, during the nineteenth century, women were excluded from most formal scientific education, but they began to be admitted into learned societies during this period.  Forty women have been awarded the Nobel Prize between 1901 and 2010. Seventeen women have been awarded the Nobel Prize in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine.

I am your host Maria Anna van Driel… and you’re listening to “The Next Truth; Where Science and Myth Meet”,   and this week I am speaking with Global Young Academy alumni and cofounder and the founder of Women In Science Without Borders, Professor Dr. Amal Amin about the important role of girls and women in science.

Sleep Disorders and the Paranormal; Is There a Scientific Connection?

With Clinical Psychologist Dr. Brian Sharpless

Download the audio file (MP3) and listen to the podcast of Dr. Brian Sharpless

Brian A. Sharpless is a licensed psychologist and author with interests in unusual psychological disorders, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and the history and philosophy of clinical psychology.

The ghost in the machine”, many people have heard this term at least one time in their life. It was a paper which was written by Coventry University lecturer Vic Tandy and published in April 1998 by the Journal of the Society for Psychical Research.

Working alone in the lab one night, Tandy suddenly gained the feeling he was being watched. He claimed a dark, shadowy figure appeared in the corner of his vision. When Tandy turned to face this shadowy figure…it vanished.

To many, these shadowy figures are better known as the Shadow People.

They are being skests as a malevolent and creepy phenomenon and have being reported by witnesses as human-like shaped dark shadows having ill intentions standing alongside your bed…watching you.

Even these eerie phenomena’s have being reported for decades, it is not your mind simply playing tricks on you.  There might be a more simpler and scientific explanation for things like ghosts, demonic hauntings and…shadow people.

I am your host Maria Anna van Driel… and you’re listening to “The Next Truth; Where Science and Myth Meet”,   and this week I am speaking with clinical psychologist, Professor Brian Sharpless about  the most creepiest sleep disorders, what treatments are there and…how deeply these disorders are woven into the paranormal.

Are those things you see in the darkness more than just a shadow?

Discover the Most Advanced Organ in the Universe: the Mysterious Brain.

Every time you see, hear, smell or taste something new, you experience this through the brain. Whether you feel hot or cold, think, talk, laugh or cry, remember or forget something, it all happens through the brain. And when the rest of your body ‘sleeps’, your brain is still working at full speed.

Why does the brain accept a conspiracy theory as fact? Has our brain undergone a new form of evolution by observing natures behaviour? And how can complex things like emotion, language, (new) memory and consciousness play out in a physical mass…even after someone is declared brain death?

The brain is the most complex structure in the universe. It is considered as the command center of the whole body. Despite several major breakthroughs in brain research, scientists around the world are still amazed by our fascinating ‘little gray cells’.

Join us on an awe-inspiring journey and discover the most advanced organ in the universe: the mysterious brain.

Can We Predict the (travel) Path of COVID-19?

“The NBC News has put it bluntly Covid models predicted devastation in Africa, but the reality is starkly different”, says J. A. Jones Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Duke University, Adrian Bejan

Coronavirus COVID-19 Global Cases by Johns Hopkins CSSE, accessed 5 March 2020.

As of 24 March 2020, more than 63.090.470 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in more than 190 countries and territories, resulting in 1.465.415 deaths and 40.366.250 recoveries.  An avalanche of theories have passed the revue ever since the World Health Organization recognized this health attacking virus as a global pandemic.

What is its origin? Where is it traveling and when does it all stop?

Even though many tent to think that COVID-19 is a young virus, the most recent common ancestor (MRCA) of all corona-viruses is, according to Wikipedia, estimated to have existed as far as 8000 BCE, although some models place the common ancestor as far back as 55 million years or more, implying long term coevolution with bat and avian species. The most recent common ancestor of the alpha-corona virus line has been placed at about 2400 BCE, of the beta-corona virus line at 3300 BCE, of the gamma-corona virus line at 2800 BCE, and of the delta-corona virus line at about 3000 BCE.

Can we merge this historic human story with an unexpected discovery of a new mental ‘connection’ between two previously disconnected physical phenomena?  Can we predict the travel path of COVID-19? J. A. Jones Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Duke University,  Adrian Bejan, says we can.

In the attached PDF Prof. A. Bejan, who has made contributions to modern thermodynamics and developed what he calls the constructal law, supports the prediction he made in March 2020 concerning the travel-path of COVID-19 and why Africa was relatively untouched by the corona virus.

Professor Adrian Bejan has made contributions to modern thermodynamics and developed the constructal law. He is the author 30 books and 650 peer-refereed journal articles, and was awarded 18 honorary doctorates from universities in 11 countries, for example the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) and the University of Rome I “La Sapienza”.

Is a Young Earth Possible?

Howard College Mathematics Professor Jay Hall Weighs In

Earth is the only planet we know of that can support life but have you ever wondered what the true age of the Earth is?

Our planet is teeming with vitality and is home to billions of plants and animals that share a common evolutionary track. How and why did we get here? What processes had to take place for this to happen? The fact is, no one has been able to come close to knowing exactly what led to the origins of life. After billions and billions of years of Earth’s formation and evolution, the evidence may have been lost.

Still, at the core of the evolutionary theory lies this big assumption that life somehow arose from non-life, which by pure chance and the right chemicals happened to be in the right place, in the right arrangement, at the right time, under the right conditions, and by some mysterious, still unknown electrochemical process BANG! Life created itself like an unabridged dictionary is resulting from an explosion in a printing shop.

The history of evolution is indeed a strange phenomenon as soon as you place it under a magnifying glass. Events suddenly overlap each other and dates contradict each other. They seem not to match up. The time-line of human evolution is starting to look…um, well…pretty messy.

I am your host Maria Anna van Driel… and you’re listening to “The Next Truth; Where Science and Myth Meet”… and this week I am speaking with Howard College (Big Spring, Texas) Mathematics Professor Jay Hall… about if Big Science could have misdated the earth’s age due to the tremendous influence of a relativistic bombardment, coming from the sun, on the fragile nature of Earth’s environment.  Do we have to re-think the evolutionary theory?

Is the Supernatural a, by Artificial Intelligence, Suppressed Form of Communication?

With Parapsychologist Dr. Dean Radin

Albert Einstein called entanglement “spooky action at a distance” — the way two objects remain connected through time and space, without communicating in any conventional way, long after their initial interaction has taken place. Could a similar entanglement of minds explain our apparent psychic abilities? Dr. Dean Radin, a senior scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences, believes it might.

Parapsychology is the study of paranormal psychic phenomena, including ESP. Unfortunately, this field of study has been criticized for continuing investigations despite being unable to provide convincing evidence for the existence of any psychic phenomena after more than a century of research.

This has made a large group within the scientific community rejecting ESP due to the absence of an evidence base, the lack of a theory which would explain ESP and the lack of positive experimental results. ESP is considered to fall in the range of that of pseudoscience.

But if is this is truly pseudoscience than why do so many people not only claim but also show that they possess a sixth sense that seems to connect with non-physical planes or “The informational aspect of reality” as Dr. Radin calls it.

I am your host Maria Anna van Driel… and you are listening to “The Next Truth; Where Science and Myth Meet” and this week I am speaking with, parapsychologist Dr. Dean Radin, PhD, who is Chief Scientist at the Institute of Noetic Science and Associated Distinguished Professor of Integral and Transpersonal Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies….with this one question in the back of our mind;   Is the supernatural a, by artificial intelligence, suppressed form of communication?
